    Our Vision: The Thayne Center envisions a world in which people’s basic needs are met and in which the values of equality and social justice are realized. We believe institutions of higher education have a responsibility to cultivate an engaged citizenry. We are therefore dedicated to empowering our students and faculty to realize they have the knowledge and skills to affect positive change in their community.

    Our Mission: The mission of the Thayne Center is to establish capacity-building relationships with community organizations, facilitate service-learning development opportunities for faculty, and coordinate service leadership programs for students who are out to change the world! We accomplish our mission by managing the following programs:

This will show you the non-profits that fit the parameters you set such as distance from you and type of service. The third option is the "Orgsync Search." This will allow you to search our database of non-profits to find the one that fits you.

VISION
Academic service-learning at SLCC is nationally recognized for best practices in faculty development, student engagement, and community partner development. The program is fully institutionalized, provides a supportive infrastructure, and facilitates the involvement of all stakeholders in a collaborative learning process.

MISSION
Service-learning is an academic pedagogy, a hands-on method of teaching and learning. Volunteer opportunities, criticalreflective thinking, and partnerships with nonprofit organizations are integrated into academic coursework. Through thesepartnerships, students and nonprofits address both course learning outcomes and issues facing our community. Faculty involvedin our service-learning program receive training and technical assistance, as well as structured opportunities for networking andprofessional development.

Thayne Center for Service & Learning offers $1,000 grants for service-learning course designation

Service-learning is a pedagogy combining service to the community with academic instruction, focusing on critical reflective thinking, and personal and civic responsibility. (American Association of Community Colleges)

The Thayne Center's Service-Learning Grant & Designation program seeks proposals for the development of new service-learning courses, or the modification of existing service-learning courses. An unlimited number of service-learning designations are awarded to viable proposals. A limited number of $1,000 grants are awarded to exemplary proposals. The program is open to all full-time and adjunct faculty.

The Thayne Center is here to support your community-based work in any way that we can. We will work with you to designate your class as a service-learning course, help you form community partnerships, brainstorm possible critical reflection assignments, anything that will engage your students with your curriculum in new and exciting ways. We also offer a number of professional development opportunities, so that you can stay current and active in the service-learning field. VISION
The Community Partner Outreach program creates sustainable partnerships that reciprocally address both community needs and student learning outcomes. We create a high-impact learning environment and positive social change, as SLCC plays an active role in the community.

MISSION
The Community Partner Outreach program identifies, creates, and strengthens mutually beneficial relationships between nonprofit community organizations, faculty, and students. Initiatives focus on training and capacity building for nonprofit partners and coordinating robust social media campaigns.

VISION
SLICE members work toward a more just and democratic society, seeking an end to the social problems we face. These students become leaders among their SLCC peers, raising awareness and inspiring actions that address community needs.

MISSION
Through structured training and guided practice, SLICE members develop the strong leadership skills necessary to bring about social change. These skills empower them to raise awareness, inspire others to become engaged, and become agents of change.

VISION
The Civically Engaged Scholar program graduates with honors any SLCC student who commits to take her/his education beyond the classroom and volunteer her/his time addressing community needs.

MISSION
Students in the Civically Engaged Scholar program receive formal education of social justice issues through designated service-learning courses. They put their education to work by serving in their community, establishing a lifelong commitment to volunteering and community engagement.

VISION
Alternative Spring Break trips are affordable, available, and accessible for every SLCC student who wants to be immersed in an intensive volunteer and travel experience. All participants come home inspired and empowered to continue making a difference.

MISSION
Alternative Spring Break is a drug and alcohol free volunteer immersion program. Through transformative action, education, and critical reflection, participants address important social issues while traveling and exploring the culture and history of the area in which they serve.

Alternative Spring Break is a national program where colleges and universities organize drug and alcohol-free trips for students that want to travel during their fall or spring breaks. Since 1999, the Thayne Center has organized over 25 ASB trips. Participants have traveled to 12 states, including New York, Hawaii, Colorado, and Washington. Alternative Spring Break at SLCC challenges students to learn about social issues, such as poverty and homelessness, and empowers them to personally make a difference through volunteering. Our flier provides more detailed information on where we are going.

Requirements
All interested students must first attend a mandatory orientation before submitting an application or paying their deposit.

VISION
The America Reads program hires enough qualified SLCC students to meet the literacy needs of our community partner elementary schools. SLCC students have a rewarding, community-based option through which to earn their federal work-study award.

MISSION
America Reads was established as a national literacy tutoring program in 1993. We provide training and a high-quality mentoring experience, enriching learning opportunities for both SLCC students and elementary school students.
After filing your FAFSA, you must be awarded Federal Work-Study in order to apply to be an America Reads Tutor. Earn your work study at $10.00 to $11.00 an hour - become a literacy tutor with America Reads!

How to apply
SLCC Financial Aid Office - to apply for federal work-study. You must have been awarded federal work study for Salt Lake Community College for the current academic year to qualify.

The Thayne Center Community Partnership Outreach program was founded to help support community organizations, foster lasting, mutually beneficial relationships and serve as a resource to the community.

Community Partnership Agreement: Review the CPA. Decide what level of partnership is best for your organization. Before completing the CPA, schedule a meeting with Sean Crossland, Community Partnerships Coordinator Sean.Crossland@slcc.edu. He's happy to meet at your site, or a location convenient for you. Initial meetings generally take about 45-60 minutes.

After a successful partnership with the Utah Commission on Volunteers and United Way of Salt Lake, and a successful 2012 Volunteer Management Training Series, the Thayne Center for Service & Learning at Salt Lake Community College is excited to announce the 2013 Volunteer Management Training. The 2013 VMT Series is a valley-wide collaboration with United Way of Salt Lake, the Bennion Community Service Center at the University of Utah, and the Center for Civic Engagement at Westminster College. Each month features one training topic and offers two opportunities to attend. Trainings will be the 2nd Wednesday from 2pm-5pm and 3rd Thursday from 9am-12pm. All workshops are held on the SLCC Taylorsville Redwood Campus in the Student Center at 4600 South Redwood Road. RSVP is required.
